Engagement Session Tips
An engagement session isn’t just about getting some nice photos. It’s a time to slow down, enjoy being together, and capture this stage of your relationship before your wedding day.
If you haven’t had professional photos taken before, it’s normal to feel a bit awkward or unsure. You don’t need to be a model or know how to pose. I’ll help guide you and keep things relaxed and natural.
Here are a few things to think about before your session.
What should we wear?
The most important thing is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
You don’t have to match exactly. Try picking outfits that go well together. Neutral and earthy tones usually look great in photos, but feel free to add some color if that suits you better.
Consider the location and season as well. A cozy sweater and jeans work nicely for fall, while lighter colors and casual outfits are great for spring or summer.
If you can’t decide between two outfits, bring them both. We can choose what looks best once we see them together.
Most importantly, don’t wear something just because you think it will look good in photos if you don’t like wearing it. When you feel comfortable, it will come through in the photos.
Choosing a location
Your engagement session doesn’t have to take place at a fancy location.
Some of my favorite locations are places that mean something to the couple, like where you first met, your favorite coffee shop, a park you visit together, or even somewhere that’s part of your daily life.
If you don’t have a specific place in mind, that’s completely fine too. I can help you find a location that fits the kind of photos you’re looking for.
We’ll also consider the lighting, scenery, and variety the location offers. I like to have a few different spots nearby so we can move around and make sure your gallery feels fresh and interesting.
What do we actually do during the session?
This is probably the biggest question I get.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
I won’t ask you to hold a complicated pose for several minutes. Instead, I’ll give you simple directions and prompts so you can do something natural together.
We might walk, talk, hold hands, sit together, dance, or just spend some time looking into each other's eyes.
The goal isn’t to make everything look perfectly posed. I want your photos to feel like you.
It’s normal if the first few photos feel a bit awkward. Usually, after the first 10 to 15 minutes, couples start to relax and forget the camera is there.
Most importantly, have fun
Your engagement session should be something you actually enjoy.
You’re celebrating an exciting time in your lives, so don’t stress about getting every pose or expression perfect. Laugh, talk, be yourselves, and let me handle the rest.
In the end, the best photos aren’t usually the ones that were perfectly planned. They’re the ones that let you look back years later and remember exactly how you felt.
So just be yourselves, bring some good energy, and let’s have fun with it.
